December 15
On Monday and Wednesday of this week, you are going to work on filling out the actual application for the Common App. As you look at the application today, you may notice that you don't have all the needed information. If you need to, open this up and home and get your parents help with any of the information you do not know/have.
We are looking to have the application completed and submitted to turnitin.com by the end of class on Wednesday.
December 12
Today is a work session. Your goal is to make sure your College Entrance Essay is completed and submitted (make sure to use Turnitin Draft Coach to help with corrections prior to submission to turnitin).
Also, you want to check StudentVUE to see if you have any current zeroes in the gradebook. If you do, use this time to get those assignments completed. Hopefully, we can get to the point that none of you are missing an assignment When we enter into Winter Break in a week.
December 10
We are aiming for you to complete your college entrance essay in the first 25-30 minutes of class today. Once you have finished the essay, you want to take time to run it through the Turnitin Draft Coach that can be opened in Google Docs. If you need help in opening this program, make sure to let me know.
Once you make corrections to your essay, based on what you discover through Draft Coach, you will need to submit your essay through turnitin. Hopefully, you can make that submission by the end of the class period.
December 8
Another work session for your College Entrance Essay. Try to get your next 1-2 paragraphs completed (for a total of 3-4 paragraphs).
Remember, the third and fourth paragraphs should be continuing to discuss your anecdote/story. Remember to use plenty of detail.
December 3
Today is your first work session for the College Entrance Essay. Your goal today is to get your first two paragraphs completed. You can find a couple of outline formats that you can use in the brainstorming ideas slideshow from last class.
Otherwise, if you need a little direction, think on the following:
First Paragraph--Introduce your topic and begin building your anecdote/story.
Second Paragraph--Begin going into detail about your anecdote/story.
Remember, this is just a personal narrative essay--like you wrote in your English 9 class.
This set of slides includes Better Methods for Starting and Ending your essay. Use them as needed.
December 1
Several things happening today, and they all centre around the Common App Entrance Essay.
First up, you will be looking at a mentor text to see what successful essays have going for them. This will be an individual and then a partnered activity.
Once the above is completed, we will take a look at the Common App essay.
From this point, you will be given time to select the prompt you are going to want to answer and have time to start brainstorming ideas.
November 24
Today begins with 15 minutes to finish the Higher Education Options Worksheet.
Next up, you will be working on a Higher Education Comparison Worksheet. You will need to use the CollegeSimply website to help with this. I will show you how to navigate the website in class.
Looks like I am able to throw this in toward the end of class today. I am simply introducing you to the Common App.
November 21
Welcome to the first day of our College Prep unit. In this unit, you will be learning what is needed to apply to a college and how to afford college. However, before we get to that point, you need to know a few things.
First up, we will begin with a Post-It Question. Once your responses are on the board, we will talk about them.
I will then introduce you to your options for higher education. During this slideshow, you can probably fill out a bit of the Higher Education Options Worksheet. Once the slideshow has finished, our remaining time in class today will be yours to conduct some research in order to fill out the worksheet.
