Please note that this list is called "100 Great Albums." It is not called "The 100 Greatest Albums." Why? Because it would be impossible to make a list of the greatest albums of all time, unless you have listened to all the albums ever produced. Thus, I have instead put together a list of 100 great albums.
These are albums that are full of amazing music, not just a single song that sounds good. Some of these albums are well-known, some are the best-selling albums in the world, and some are relatively unheard of, but they all have their merits that landed them on this list.
Take some time to acquaint yourself with some new music. You should be able to find most (if not all) of these albums through your faviourite method of listening to music.. Remember, as you listen, that not all lyrics are appropriate to all audiences. Preview before you share with your little brother or sister.

Cassidy, Eva--Songbird
Dying young, Cassidy did not get to see her popularity soar. Her greatest success, Songbird, did not become a hit until two years after she died. Containing covers of Sting's Fields of Gold, and the classic "Over the Rainbow" gave Cassidy fans that flocked to the limited material she produced in her lifetime.
Chieftains, The--The Long Black Veil
And the Grammy for best Pop Collaboration with Vocals...did not go to Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men (everyone's obvious choice). No, it went to the Chieftains and Van Morrison for the song "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You?". Most popular doesn't mean the best. This album, full of duets (Mick Jagger, The Rolling Stones, Tom Jones, Sting) find the traditional Irish band at the top of their game.

You might know the Fresh Prince as the actor Will Smith, but here he is at the beginning of his career. A rap album that does not rely on profanity, racism, or sexualisation of women...you need to try this.
Daniels Charlie--A Decade of Hits

Pacific Northwest native Pete Droge never attained wide commercial success. In fact, his debut album contained his biggest hit (in part thanks to its inclusion on the Dumb and Dumber soundtrack), "If You Don't Love Me (I'll Kill Myself)". However, if you listen to the rest of the album, you will find an amazing singer/songwriter. Listen to it once, and then come back for seconds.
Eagles, The--Their Greatest Hits
So which has sold more, this album or Michael Jackson's Trhiller? It keeps going back and forth. The debut album of the folk/punk Irish band out of LA. Sound confusing yet? Doesn't matter, Flogging Molly is here to stay and their style of music has landed them fans across numerous demographics.
Foster, Radney--Del Rio, TX 1959
A great hit-maker for other artists, Foster's solo debut album showcases his songwriting ability. Whether its fast-paced "Nobody Wins" or the somber "Went for a Ride", Foster crafts a solid album. In fact, Hootie and the Blowfish covered his song "A Fine Line" as a B-Side to their single for "Let Her Cry."
Frampton, Peter--Frampton Comes Alive
A guitar god who showed his goods on this double live album. This 11 million copy worldwide seller is regularly considered one of the finest live rock recordings of all time.

Luckily, we are able to forget the Fugees first album with the release of this one. A well put together effort that offered a guiding path for where each member would go in the future.
Gabriel, Peter--So
A solid rock album with iconic songs. Some of the songs show up in soundtracks (hold that boombox over your head), and two videos are produced by the same people that created Wallace and Gromit. If you don't know "Big Time" and "Sledgehammer" get started...and soon.

Out of Newfoundland, this band had several albums top the charts in Canada. Though now retired, the band built up a cult following that crossed borders. This album contained songs that touched on their sea chanty roots and also those of a modern rock band.
Guess Who, The--Greatest Hits
Another Canadian band, the Guess Who had many hits, and they are all collected here. You will not go wrong with "American Woman" and "These Eyes" and you can have fun with "Clap for the Wolfman"; a song that paid homage to the DJ Wolfman Jack.
Gugulethu, The Tenors--The Gugulethu Tenors
Yep, another group of tenors. So? They're out of South Africa--that's pretty cool. They are self-trained--that's amazing. That's worth listening to.
Guthrie, Arlo--Alice's Restaurant
Son of Woody Guthrie, Arlo made his mark on the music world with Alice's Restaurant. It's a fun album, but I won't be upset if you don't make it past the title song...it is 18 minutes long.
Hendrix, Jimi--The Ultimate Experience
What needs to be said? It's Jimi. If you haven't had the experience, you haven't lived. Enjoy the show from start to finish.

James, Tommy & the Shondells--Anthology
A greatest hits package that packs a full punch of late 60's and early 70's rock. You can't go wrong here. How influential was Tommy James? Two of his songs were covered in the late 80's and then "Weird Al" recorded parodies to both of those songs.
Jarosz, Sarah--Build Me Up From Bones
Let's feel inadequate...Sarah released her first album by the time she was eighteen, and by 26 had already won two Grammy awards. Maybe you should be listening to this folk musician.
Jewel--Pieces of You
How big was this album? By the time it hit its stride and rose toward the top of the charts, it was sandwiched between Nirvana and Soundgarden. Two grunge bands, and one folksy, guitar-driven album by a homeless 21-year-old. It is one of the best-selling debuts in history.
Joel, Billy--The Nylon Curtain
Joel has a long history in the music industry, and his solid albums are many. For this one, one of Joel's favourites, you just need to listen to songs like "Allentown", "Goodnight Saigon" and "Pressure" to get a strong feel for the album and its messages.
Lennon, John--The John Lennon Collection
With the Beatles, Lennon made history. With his solo career, he made history. I am noticing a trend. Take a trip down this retrospective album and get a feel for the causes Lennon believed in.
Lennox, Annie--Songs of Mass Destruction
Whether solo or with the Eurythmics, Annie Lennox's voice is distinctive, wide-ranging, and worth revisiting every chance you get. With her 2007 album, the songs are powerful and match the vocals. Listen to "Ghost in the Machine." For an amazing collaboration, listen to "Sing" Lennox performs this one with 23 other female singers.

How many albums deserve their own tour to celebrate its 25th anniversary. Sports did. Take a listen and realise this album helps to mark the 80's on the map of time.

The title of the album says it all. A life cut short by cancer, but a catalog of music that is still inspiring musicians nearly 40 years later.
Matchbox Twenty--Yourself or Someone Like You
Another of those albums that could be a greatest hits package. Six singles, more than 15 million copies sold worldwide, and the world's introduction to the great voice of Rob Thomas.
McCartney, Paul--All the Best!
Hey, look! Another former Beatle. Like John Lennon, Paul has had an amazing solo career (or with Wings). As the title states, it's "All the Best!" Get listening, and realise Sir Paul did sing a song for a James Bond Movie.
McKenzie, Bob and Doug--Great White North
They're not really brothers, and these are only stage names, but Bob and Doug are legends, eh. Listen to this album for the rambling fun, and the great songs "Take Off" and the "12 Days of Christmas." When you're done, watch their movie, Strange Brew.
Mellencamp, John--Words + Music
A true American legend, Mellencamp has landed himself in a field of his own. He music is a blend of rock, gospel, folk, and country. It works, and works well. This two disc set covers about thirty years of his career, and you can find everything in here (yes, even "Jack and Diane").

Moyet, Alison--Essex

Nirvana--In Utero
People will always say grunge started with Nirvana's seminal album Nevermind, but you can't forget In Utero. From songs such as "Rape Me" and "Heart-Shaped Box", Kurt Cobain continued to amaze.
Nirvana--Nevermind
Yep, one of the best albums of all time--30 million copies sold worldwide helps to prove that. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is the go-to song, but don't forget tracks like "Lithium" and "Come As You Are."
Oak Ridge Boys--Collection
A country/gospel group that has been around since the 1940's, the incarnation that most people know is the one that has been around since the 1970's. The Oak Ridge Boys were one of the first country acts to find their music landing on the pop charts, as well. This greatest hits collection is a solid look at Americana.
Offspring, The--Smash
Green Day and The Offspring both hit it big in the same year, and though Green Day has lasted stronger and longer, Smash is still an album that needs to be listened to...often. The social commentary alone in songs like "Not the One" and "Come Out and Play" are worth the price of admission.
Original Broadway Cast Recording--Monty Python's Spamalot
Let's take one of the greatest Arthurian movies--a comedy, no less--and turn it into a Broadway musical. It worked. It won three Tony Awards.
Original Broadway Cast Recording--The Phantom of the Opera
Based on the French novel by Gaston Leroux, Phantom has become the third-longest running production in London's West End. Love or hate Andrew Lloyd Webber, he put together an amazing romance for the stage.

Queen--Greatest Hits
In Graham's opinion, the greatest rock band of all time. Whether you agree or not, you cannot deny that Queen produced some of the most recognisable songs of the 70's and 80's. Where would we be without "We Will Rock You", "We Are the Champions", or "Bohemian Rhapsody"? Their greatest hits album is the best-selling album, of all time, in the UK, and has sold over eight million copies in the US.
Queen--Live at Wembley '86
One thing to remember about Queen--they knew how to put on a show. The album of their Wembley concerts is a masterpiece of showmanship, and has sold several million copies globally. Many of today's artists have used Queen's shows as a guide on how to give audiences the ultimate concert experience.

The concert in Central Park was huge, and Simon and Garfunkel were huge--it was a perfect fit. The album of the benefit concert sold more than 4 million copies worldwide.
Simon, Paul--Graceland
Paul Simon has also had a very successful solo career. His success was never more evident than with Graceland. The album including musicians from South Africa--a fact that brought Simon both praise and ridicule (because Apartheid was still in effect in South Africa). With songs like "You Can Call Me Al", "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes" and the title track, Simon put together the biggest album of his career.
Sir Mix-A-Lot--Mack Daddy
Yes, this album has "Baby Got Back", but Mix throws quite a bit of social commentary into the fold, as well. Songs like "One Time's Got No Case" and "Testarossa" give voice to Mix's opinions on the treatment of African Americans and the lack of skill/originality of some rappers/MCs.
Skyedance--Way Out to Hope Street
Take some of the brightest musicians in the Celtic scene, put them together in a band, and you get Skyedance. This Celtic fusion band created solid tracks that still resonate today.

Soundtrack--Trespass
Some movies are forgotten for good reasons. Some movies have soundtracks that shouldn't be forgotten. Trespass puts out solid rap including the title track by Ice-T and Ice Cube (now that's a duet), and Sir Mix-A-Lot's original version of "I Check My Bank." This is a great time capsule of early 90's gangsta rap.

If you have never heard Robin Williams giving one of his stand-up routines, you are missing out. If you need an introduction, you can't beat starting with his show at the Metropolitan Opera House. Yes, some of the segments are dated (references to Reagan and Gorbachev), but really, you are too focused on Williams to care.
Yankovic, "Weird Al"--Even Worse
If you are not familiar with the king of parody, you should be.

A rap album that does not rely on profanity, racism, or sexualisation of women...you need to try this.
Daniels Charlie--A Decade of Hits

In fact, his debut album contained his biggest hit (in part thanks to its inclusion on the Dumb and Dumber soundtrack), "If You Don't Love Me (I'll Kill Myself)". However, if you listen to the rest of the album, you will find an amazing singer/songwriter. Listen to it once, and then come back for seconds.

A great hit-maker for other artists, Foster's solo debut album showcases his songwriting ability. Whether its fast-paced "Nobody Wins" or the somber "Went for a Ride", Foster crafts a solid album. A solid rock album with iconic songs. Some of the songs show up in soundtracks (hold that boombox over your head), and two videos are produced by the same people that created Wallace and Gromit. If you don't know "Big Time" and "Sledgehammer" get started...and soon.

Whether solo or with the Eurythmics, Annie Lennox's voice is distinctive, wide-ranging, and worth revisiting every chance you get. With her 2007 album, the songs are powerful and match the vocals. The title of the album says it all. A life cut short by cancer, but a catalog of music that is still inspiring musicians nearly 40 years later.

Another of those albums that could be a greatest hits package. Six singles, more than 15 million copies sold worldwide, and the world's introduction to the great voice of Rob Thomas.

Queen--Greatest Hits
In Graham's opinion, the greatest rock band of all time. Whether you agree or not, you cannot deny that Queen produced some of the most recognisable songs of the 70's and 80's. Their greatest hits album is the best-selling album, of all time, in the UK, and has sold over eight million copies in the US.
Queen--Live at Wembley '86

Paul Simon has also had a very successful solo career. His success was never more evident than with Graceland.

"Weird Al" has the ability to take the hit songs you know and transform them into new hits...or at least gives you lyrics you find yourself singing instead of the originals. This album is one of his best with covers of Michael Jackson, Tiffany, and Billy Idol taking center stage.
