Global Folklore--Unit 3
(FOlklore of Oregon)

November 18
Today is our last day of the Folklore of Oregon unit.  That means you need to focus on three things.
1) Today is the last day you can give your Lost Blue Bucket Mine presentation in class--make sure you are ready to present.
2) Today is the last day you can turn in any formative (20%) assignments from this unit--finish them up.
3) If you need to make up an assessment, this is the time to do it.  Get rid of those 80% zeroes!

November 17

Priority today is presentation clean-up.  If you have not given your Lost Blue Bucket Mine presentation yet, you want to get it taken care of.  Remember, between your short essay and the presentation, that's two 80% scores in the gradebook.
Any leftover time is yours to continue working on any missing assignments.

November 13
We will be trying to get through all the Lost Blue Bucket Mine Presentations today.  Hopefully, you are all ready to go.
Any remaining today is yours to get caught up on missing assignments.  Take a look at your StudentVUE, see what is missing, and then work on completing those items--that includes finishing to prep for your presentation if needed.

November 10

Today should be the first day of our Lost Blue Bucket Mine Presentations...we'll see how that goes.
The remainder of today's time is yours to get caught up on missing assignments.  Take a look at your StudentVUE, see what is missing, and then work on completing those items--that includes finishing to prep for your presentation if needed.

November 6
This is your last day in class to be working on your Lost Blue Bucket Mine Assessment (prep work).  Next Week, you will be giving your presentations and handing in a physical copy of your short essay.
Use your time wisely and ask for help as needed.

November 4
Continuing working on your Lost Blue Bucket Mine Assessment.  Make sure the four versions have been read, make your choice for the most plausible and then start writing your mini-essay.
You will also need to sign-up for your presentation date today.

November 3
It is time to start working on your first speaking assessment.  The Lost Blue Bucket Mine Assessment will give you two assessment scores in the gradebook--one for S4 and one for W9.
Once introduced to the assessment, you will be given time to begin working on it.  When out of class, you will still have access to the Lost Blue Bucket Mine stories by clicking this link.

October 30
Up first today is your second attempt at the RL4 standard.  This assessment will use the Lost Blue Bucket Mine stories from our Oregon Folklore text.  The assessment should take no more than 40 minutes, but you will have until the end of class to complete the assessment if needed.
As you finish the assessment, you should use the remaining time to complete the Folk Literature Writing Assignment, which was given on Wednesday.

October 28
Okay, now we will take care of the A Look at Oregon Folklore Group Activity.
Once we have completed that activity, you will spend the remainder of the day working on a Folk Literature Writing Assignment, in which you will need to build a piece of folk literature based on one of three objects you will be shown in class.  The assignment is below.

Your assignment today is to create a piece of folk literature for one of the three items I am going to show you.
     Your story…
needs to be handwritten and should be between 200-250 words in length.
should be one of the following: folktale, tall tale, myth, legend, urban legend
should either incorporate the item you have chosen, or be a story that explains why “our” culture has created this item (as a tool, commemorative piece, etc.)
is due by the end of class Thursday.

October 27

Today we are watching a video on the Top 10 Scary Urban Legends of Oregon (I don't think they are all that scary.)  You will be filling out a worksheet while watching the video--you will be trying to figure out how we can either prove or disprove each urban legend.

October 21
Working on completing A Look at Oregon Folklore Activity.  You will have 30 minutes to try and finish this up.  We will then move into a group activity, and end things with a quick class discussion.
Any remaining time can be used to complete any missing work--remember, the grading period ends tomorrow.

October 16
Over the next couple of class sessions, you will be working on the A Look at Oregon Folklore Activity.  While in class, you will be able to use the textbook.  Outside of class, you will need to refer to the PDFs below to get the readings.
"How Fish-Hawk Raided the Sioux"
"Coyote and the Strawberries"
"Bloody Fingers"
"Another Remarkable Shot"
"Paul Bunyan's Logging at Shoreacres"
"Buried Treasure from a Spanish Galleon"
"Finn Upholds His Reputation as a Liar"
"Tebo's Pet Fish"
"The Biggest Catch"
"Lavender"

October 14
First up today is our Text Perusal Activity (if you are absent, you will need to come in to make up this assignment).  This will begin as a individual activity, but end with some short class discussion.
The remainder of today's time is yours to complete any missing assessment (we have had two).  The RL4 assessment can be seen on StudentVUE (to see if it is missing).  As for the RL2 assessment, if you have not submitted it to turnitin.com, then you need to finish and submit there.  RL2 assessment information and readings available on our Unit 2 webpage (October 2).

October 13
It's time to take a look at some of the folklore that Oregon has contributed to the world.
Up first, let's take a look at the terms you need to know for this unit.
We will follow that up with a perusal of the book we will be using for this unit (the closest we get to a textbook).  We will continue this perusal next class for a quick activity.
