May 16/20
This is your first day to work on your Scriptwriting Project. Use this time to figure out what your story is going to be about, character names, set design, and format prep. If you have time to start writing, please do so.
May 14/15
Today will begin with a film clip from a filmed version of Ibsen's Hedda Gabler.
The next 50 minutes of class is yours to work on completing your mini-scripts and getting them submitted to turnitin.com. Remember, you have the Marlowe Script, Insult Script, and Death Scene Script.
The final item of the day is an introduction to your Scriptwriting Project. Seniors, you will need to have your script submitted to turnitin.com by June 3 (at the latest). Sophomores and Juniors, you will need to have your script submitted by June 6.
May 13
The day will begin with a short discussion over the video from last class.
Up next, the man who helped usher theatre into the modern era: Henrik Ibsen. We will be reading an excerpt from his play Hedda Gabler. Depending on time, we will watch a clip of this scene--if it looks like we are running short on time, we will start with the clip during our next class session.
For your final mini-script assignment, you will work on building a solid death scene. Your mini-script will need to be completed and submitted on turnitin.com by Monday/Tuesday of next week (May 20/21).
May 9/10
Today we are spending our time watching the Reduced Shakespeare Company's play The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged. The purpose in watching the video is twofold. First off, I hope you enjoy it. Second, I want you paying attention to the dialogue and how realistic and natural it sounds. That is what you are aiming for in your work.
May 7/8
Lots going on today, so let's get started...First up, it's a mini-bio on Edmond Rostand.
We will take a look at an excerpt from Rostand's most famous work, Cyrano de Bergerac. After our reading, we will take a look at two film versions of the scene we just read. That will lead us to a QuickWrite.
Our next activity comes in three parts. We will finish the first two parts of the Insult Activity in class. Meanwhile, the third part is your next mini-script. It is due on May 14/15.
May 6
Today, we continue working with Christopher Marlowe. The first thing we are going to do is read through an excerpt of his play The Tragical History of Dr. Faustus. After our reading and short discussion, it will be time to learn about your homework assignment, which you will have time to begin working on in class.
Marlowe Play Assignment
Christopher Marlowe was supposedly killed in a pub. I want you to write about that moment when he was there, and the minutes before he is killed. Try to figure out a reason why his friends/colleagues would want to kill him, or if they really did kill him...
Your play needs to be 2-3 pages in length, use the standard script format, and have no more than four characters. Typed is always preferred.
Due Date: Thursday/Friday of tis week (May 9/10)
May 1/2
To start our unit, let's get the Elements of Drama notes (both Part I and Part II) out of the way.
From there, we'll take a look at the scriptwriting format. You can either create the format by hand on a Google Doc, or you can use this template, which uses Microsoft Word.
Our first activity for this unit will be a partnered activity in which you get used to the idea of the format for your scripts. This Coffee Shop activity is due before you and your partner leave today.
Finally, you will be receiving a mini-bio on Christopher Marlowe. As stated in our previous class, this is the only time you will need to write down the bio as notes. You will be using this information for an assignment you will receive next week.
