Scriptwriting Unit

Here is the template for our scripts.  Make sure to use this for all script assignments and the project.

January 15/16
Today is a work session for your 10-minute Play Project.  Aim to complete 2-3 pages today.  Today is also the day that the project opens on turnitin.com.  You can begin submitting your project once you have completed it.

January 13/14

Let's begin with our last playwright: Nilo Cruz.  We will then read an excerpt from his play Lorca in the Green Dress.
The remainder of today's time is yours to continue working on your 10-minute Play Project.

January 12

We are finally getting to Oscar Wilde and The Importance of Being Earnest today.

January 8/9
Here's to hoping I will be back in class on Friday, but for Thursday, I am still out.  My son decided to share the flu, so now it's the parents of the housing feeling like we're dying.
Today will be another work day for your 10-minute Play Project.  I will take time with you on Monday to check in on everyone's progress.

January 6/7
*A&  B Days: Sorry, home with a kid with a 102 degree temperature.  We will complete today's activity on Thursday.  Use today to begin working on your 10-minute Play Project.
Our next playwright is Oscar Wilde.  We will talk about him for a couple of minutes and then we will read an excerpt from his play The Importance of Being Earnest.  While reading this excerpt, we will take a look at the subtle nature of humour in a play.
Once done with Wilde, you will have the remainder of today's class to begin working on your 10-minute Play Project.

January 5
On this first day back from break, I am introducing you to your last unit project of the semester.  This is your 10-minute Play Project.  Work sessions and due dates will be given in class.
Once I have introduced the project and taken questions, you will have any remaining time to brainstorm ideas for your script story.  Remember, you can expand any of the three mini-script assignments, convert your short story project into a script, or come up with a completely new idea.

December 18/19
Today we are watching The Complete Works of Shakespeare Abridged.  The purpose of watching this play is so that you can get a feel for realistic dialogue.  I want you to be able to create dialogue such as you will hear in this show--smooth, natural, believable.

December 16/17
It is time to learn about Henrik Ibsen.  From there, we will take a look at an excerpt from his play Hedda Gabler.
That will lead us into our third and final mini-script assignment--The Death Scene assignment.  You are aiming to have this one completed by January 5.

December 15
Today, we have a three-part Insult Activity.  The first two parts will be completed in class today.  The final part of this activity is your next mini-script (so make sure you are looking at the final slide).  Try to have your mini-script completed and submitted to turnitin.com by the end of this week.

December 11/12
The day begins with 20 minutes to work on your Marlowe Mini-Script.  Try to get this finished and submitted to turnitin.com.
From there, we will get introduce to Edmond Rostand.  We will need three readers for our excerpt from Rostand's masterpiece Cyrano de Bergerac.
Once finished with the reading, we will watch two film versions of the scene we read.  One will be in English and one in French.  You will then need to write a short response about the clips.

December 9/10
First up, a quick look at our template (see above).
Now, it is time to try your hand at the format.  For this Coffee Shop Partnered Activity, you will (for the one and only time) create a handwritten script together.  You will have 20 minutes to work on this activity.
We will be looking at our first playwright; Christopher Marlowe, and he is the only bio that I am asking you to take notes on.  We will then read an excerpt from his play Dr. Faustus.  Remember, I will need some help with these readings.
Finally, you will receive your first mini-script assignments and will hopefully have some time to start working on it today.
Assignment: The End of Marlowe
     Due: Thursday/Friday (December 11/12)

Christopher Marlowe was supposedly killed in a pub.  I want you to write about either that moment when he was there, and the minutes before he is killed or about the moment Marlowe and his friends fake his death.  Try to figure out a reason why his friends/colleagues would want to kill him.
Your play needs to be 2-3 pages in length, use the standard script format, and have no more than four characters.  Typed is required.  Submission will be through turnitin.com.

December 8
Welcome to our final unit of the semester.  By the time you are done with this one, you should have been able to put together a 10-minute play (more on that later).
The day will start with our Elements of Drama notes.  As always these will be broken up into Part I and Part II.
As time permits, I will also be introducing you to the Script Format.  To make things easier for you, we do have a template you can use in building your scripts.  You can find a link to the template at the top of this page--it will be there throughout this unit.
